The focus of this article is the influence of Lev Shestov’s ideas on European intellectuals, especially French philosophers and poets. The author shows that the Russian thinker had a significant impact on shaping the intellectual atmosphere in France at the first half of the twentieth century, contributing to the rise of existentialist philosophy. Among Shestov’s direct philosophical followers are literary critic, writer, and musicologist Boris de Schloezer; essayist and philosopher Georges Bataille; and poet Benjamin Fondane.

This volume sets out to address the question as to whether and how the critical conception of objectivity could still be relevant in contemporary philosophy. This means reflecting on the validity of the ascription of certaindefects to the Kantian system, as well as on their very description as defects. In order to do so, the volume brings together presentations that treat Kantian objectivity from many different angles. Some are more traditionally exegetical in nature, and discuss the interpretation of concepts within (...) or traits of Kant’s philosophy. Others trace the fate of the Kantian legacy in later philosophical and scientific thought. Still others reflect on the potential of transcendental perspectives for con-temporary philosophy and science. It is this variety in focus that makes the engagement with critical objectivity in this volume of interest not only to professional historians of philosophy and science, but to researchers engaged with the philosophical aspects of objectivity in their fields in general. The Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure (1857-1913) revolutionized the study of language, signs, and discourse in the twentieth century. He successfully reconstructed the proto-Indo-European vowel system, advanced a conception of language as a system of arbitrary signs made meaningful through kinetic interrelationships, and developed a theory of the anagram so profound it gave rise to poststructural literary criticism. The roots of these disparate, even contradictory achievements lie in the thought of Early German Romanticism, which Saussure consulted for its insight into (...) the nature of meaning and discourse. Conducting the first comprehensive analysis of Saussure's intellectual heritage, Boris Gasparov links Sassurean notions of cognition, language, and history to early Romantic theories of cognition and the transmission of cultural memory. In particular, several fundamental categories of Saussure's philosophy of language, such as the differential nature of language, the mutability and immutability of semiotic values, and the duality of the signifier and the signified, are rooted in early Romantic theories of "progressive" cognition and child cognitive development. Consulting a wealth of sources only recently made available, Gasparov casts the seeming contradictions and paradoxes of Saussure's work as a genuine tension between the desire to bring linguistics and semiotics in line with modernist epistemology on the one hand, and Jena Romantics' awareness of language's dynamism and its transcendence of the boundaries of categorical reasoning on the other. Advancing a radical new understanding of Saussure, Gasparov reveals aspects of the intellectual's work previously overlooked by both his followers and his postmodern critics. (shrink)

Im 2009 erschienenen Buch "Philosophie des Leidens" versucht Boris Wandruszka, jene immanente Lebensstruktur und Lebensdynamik aufzudecken, die zu den einfachsten und fundamentalen Strukturmomenten des Leidens vorstosst; diese erste "Wissenschaft vom Leiden" transzendierte daher nicht die Grenzen der Anschaubarkeit, sondern verblieb in der "Immanenz des 'inneren Lebens' bzw. des Erlebens". Im aktuellen Buch "Metaphysik des Leidens" werden die "realen Bedingungen der Moglichkeit von Leiden" ermittelt: Wie muss eine Welt beschaffen sein, damit darin ein leidendes Wesen erscheinen konne? Welche Rolle hat (...) das Leiden in Bezug zum fundamentalen Widerfahrnis-, Resonanz- und Responsivitatscharakter des Lebens? Es wird gezeigt, dass menschliches Leben, das einer plural-agonalen Welt ausgesetzt ist, nicht leidfrei moglich ist, dass aber andererseits das Leid nicht das letzte Wort sein kann, sondern notwendig auf Ganzheit, Reifung, Erlosung und Harmonie bezogen ist. Nur auf dem Hintergrund der Spannung zwischen absoluter Seins-, Sinn- und Lebensfulle und der stets problematischen und fragilen Teilhabe von Menschen am "absoluten und leiduberwindenden Urleben" kann Leiden entstehen, durchlitten, verstanden, aber auch uberwunden werden. Hier erreicht der "Opfergedanke", in dem das unvermeidliche Leid frei angenommen und dadurch transformiert wird, seine reinste und hochste Ausformung. Erst nach Klarung dieser Verhaltnisse wird die "Theodizeefrage" als "das Problem der Probleme" angegangen und am Leitfaden der Hiob-Erzahlung diskutiert. Letztlich erweist sich, dass trotz allem Schmerz, Mangel, Unrecht und Unsinn ein "Potential des Unendlichen" im Leiden verborgen liegt, das auf seine Uberwindung durch Sein-, Sinn- und Werterfullung, durch Tat, Erkenntnis und Liebe verweist und dass diese drei "Machte" der Leidensherausforderung bedurfen, um ihre Weite, Tiefe und Hohe auszuloten. Les choses de ce monde sont-elles données à la pensée ? Les choses sont-elles supposées être connues, être des manifestations objectives d’un pouvoir conditionné transcendantalement ? La tradition philosophique occidentale, selon François Laruelle, présuppose cette constitution transcendantale du réel. Une présupposition qui exalte la philosophie elle-même en tant que réceptrice désignée du don transcendantal. Dans notre article sur le projet de Laruelle, nous souhaitons montrer que cette présupposition incisive contrôle même des critiques soi-disant radicales de la tradition philosophique, qui ont (...) proliféré à la suite de la pensée de Nietzsche et de Heidegger. C’est pourquoi une critique efficace de la philosophie doit être non-philosophique. Selon Laruelle, elle doit suspendre la présupposition que l’altérité est donnée pour être connue et que la pensée a une structure fondamentalement différente. La non-philosophie commence, non pas avec la différence, ni avec le sujet et l’objet, mais avec la postulation de l’Un. Partant de ce point axiomatique, la non-philosophie prend comme matériau la philosophie repensée selon l’Un. Le projet non-philosophique ne commence pas, comme tant de philosophie post-moderne, en annonçant la fin de la philosophie. Il prend la philosophie comme occasion de poser la question d’une autre sorte de pensée – une sorte qui, au lieu de se rapporter au monde qu’elle présuppose en se différenciant, affirme qu’elle est, en dernière instance, en chair et en os en Un avec ce qu’elle ne peut jamais connaître. Sind die Dinge dieser Welt etwas dem Gedanken Gegebenes? Sind sie gemeint, um erkannt zu werden, um als objektive Manifestationen transzendental bedingter Kräfte betrachtet zu werden? Die westliche philosophische Tradition, Francois Laruelle zufolge, setzt gerade diese transzendentale Konstitution des Realen voraus – eine Sehweise, die die Philosophie an sich als designierte Empfängerin der transzendentalen Gabe lobpreist. In unserem Artikel zum Laruelles zielbewussten Projekt versuchen wir zu schildern, wie die betreffende Voraussetzung sogar die vorgeblich radikalen Kritiken der philosophischen Tradition der Kontrolle (...) unterwirft, die sich in der postmodernen Nachfolgeperiode von Nietzsche und Heidegger vermehrt haben. Die effektive Kritik der Philosophie muss nichtphilosophisch sein. Laut Laruelle soll sie die Annahmen ausschließen, wonach die Anderheit zum Erkennen gegeben sei und der Gedanke eine elementar ungleiche Struktur besitze. Die Nichtphilosophie setzt nicht mit der Differenz an, nicht mit dem Subjekt und Objekt, sondern mit der Postulierung des Einen. Von diesem axiomatischen Ausgangspunkt her fasst die Nichtphilosophie die Wiederabwägung gegenüber dem Einen als eigene materielle Philosophie. Das nichtphilosophische Projekt sagt nicht, wie vorab die postmoderne Philosophie, den Ausklang der Philosophie an. Vielmehr beurteilt es die Philosophie als die Gelegenheit zur Fragestellung nach einer anderen Eigenheit des Denkens – jenes, welches anstatt vielschichtig von der Welt zu handeln, die es voraussetzt, letzten Endes ihre Verkörperung mit dem Einen bestätigt, das man niemals zu kennen vermag. En el siguiente ensayo se realiza un análisis crítico del tecnicismo cientificista surgido en la modernidad, a través del pensamiento existencialista de William Barrett, quien se destaca por ser uno de los principales promotores del existencialismo en Norteamérica. Con esto, Barrett pretendía contrarrestar el auge del saber tecnocientífico que se encontraba influenciando de manera negativa en la filosofía norteamericana y, además, en la religión; provocando un tránsito de la fe religiosa a la fe centrada en la técnica-tecnología, lo que ocasiona (...) el ‘sentimiento de desamparo’ en el sujeto. De esta manera, Barrett presenta al existencialismo como la mejor opción para remediar la crisis ético-antropológica que el hombre moderno se encontraba padeciendo, ya que le permite recuperar el sentido de lo humano y concientizar a la prominente masa de individuos para que puedan descubrir su verdadero destino histórico. Lange Zeit wurde in der modernen Forschung die These vertreten, dass der Dominikanertheologe Melchior Cano , dessen Werk de locis theologicis die wohl erste moderne fundamentaltheologische Schrift darstellt, aus der subjektiven Sicht der Gegenreformation ohne Autopsie der reformatorischen Schriften gegen die sich verbreitenden Ansichten der Lutheraner argumentierte. Dass sich eine derartige These in den loci nicht verifizieren lässt, möchte die vorliegende Untersuchung herausstellen.For quite an amount of time modern researchers argued that the Dominican theologian Melchior Cano - his most famous (...) writing de locis theologicis should certainly be seen as the first fundamental work of modern theology - has kept on writing against the spreading doctrine of the Lutheran theology from the prospect of the catholic counter-reformation and without knowing or viewing the writings of the reformation. Melchior Canos Hauptschrift _De locis theologicis_, deren Genese in die Mitte des 16. Jahrhunderts zu datieren ist, stellt durch die Konzeption der Orte einen deutlichen Einschnitt in der Geschichte der theologischen Methodologie dar. Nach Canos Ansicht ist der Theologe unter Zuhilfenahme der angeführten zehn Orte der Theologie und gestützt auf die daraus entnommenen Argumente in der Lage, Glaubensgegnern in der Disputation über theologische Prinzipien, Schlussfolgerungen und Fragestellungen entgegenzutreten – wie beispielsweise in der von Cano im zwölften Buch für den Studenten (...) der Theologie als Muster abgefassten Diskussion über die Unsterblichkeit der Seele. Die vorliegende Studie versucht, gerade anhand dieser theologischen Fragestellung Canos Konzept des dogmatischen Beweises zu analysieren und nachhaltig darzustellen. (shrink)

The Catholic Monarchy is the short-lived dynastic union (1580-1640) between the kingdoms of Spain and Portugal. By returning on the legal, political and pragmatic foundations of this empire which cannot be called Empire (because this name belongs to the Holy Roman Empire of the cousins of Vienna), the article tries to seize better the internal functioning of this heterogeneous political set, by adopting two points of view: that of America (how the notion of Catholic Monarchy is understood in the reynos, (...) far from Madrid and Lisbon) and that of Rome (how Holy See reaches - or not - to exist in the heart of this space). It emerges from it that the pope and the Catholic King are natural allies (around the Roman Christianity) but not objectives (their purposes do not match), and that Rome and Mexico as well picture themselves not as margins of the Catholic Monarchy, but as real centers.
